Bookstores in Lisbon
On January 3, 2019 by brian.haferkampToday was a fun outing. We went to two famous bookstores in Lisbon, finally ate a bifana (pork sandwich on fresh baked bread) and had some more tasty treats from our friend, Chef João’s bakery. It was a great day.
The first bookshop is called, Livraria Bertand. It was opened in the 18th century and is the oldest operating bookstore in the world. This is not the original site but the bookstore has been at this site since 1773.
The second bookstore we went to is right up the block. It is called, Livraria Sá da Costa Editorio. You get a good sense of the shop on their Instagram page.
This store seemed like it should be the oldest bookstores in the world. There were really great antique books ($400+) and even some really interesting paintings and artifacts. We even found the “back room” with all of the really old books.
We were pretty hungry after the book shopping. There is a place near the shops we have been trying to get to called, O Trevo. They sell bifanas, which are really simple pork sandwiches that are famous in Portugal. The late Anthony Bourdain once visited this shop for bifanas on his tv show. We were impressed. Simple, filling, delicious. We were doubly impressed when we saw someone from Chef João’s bakery delivering the rolls the sandwich is on 👍👍
Finally, we went back to Chef João’s bakery and had some dessert. The bakery is just across the plaza from O Trevo.
