Oh, the Seafood
On December 22, 2018 by brian.haferkampAfter spending the day working on our special family project, we decided to stay closer to home for dinner on Friday. We are staying in a house above the town of Caxias (kah-shyee-ahs). So we went exploring this little town.
The restaurants take a break from about 2pm to 7pm. We were early, so we walked around a bit, checking out the menus as we went. We were looking for a specific dish: Amêijoas à Bulhão Pato. Essentially that translates to clams Bulhão Pato-style. Bulhão Pato was a famous Portuguese poet. It’s a dish served regularly here and it’s amazing–and amazingly simple. Make it yourself with this recipe from the Smitten Kitchen: Steamed clams in butter and garlic sauce.
Here are some images of the town:
We found the restaurant that we wanted. It’s not on any mapping program we could find, but that might be what made it so good 🙂
The restaurant was called A Carula. We went with the waiter’s suggestion–sea bass for two with potatoes and cabbage. We’re not much for cabbage, but this was pretty special. I think they drowned it in butter. It wasn’t bitter and tasted delicious. We also had the clams we were looking for and some grilled squid in garlic and olive oil. After all that we still had some room to sample some deserts. Here’s a look inside the restaurant:
The restaurant was wonderful and the waiter was spot on with the sea bass and the desserts he suggested.
We’re thankful for the bounty of the earth and taste buds 🙂
