Wednesday Adventures
On December 19, 2018 by brian.haferkampToday, we had another successful trip to the store. We decided to go to a more local supermarket in the middle of the adjacent town.
Before we got started, we needed a little snack so we stopped at a pastry shop across the street from the grocery store.
One of the national culinary treasures is pastel de nata, a really amazing custard tart.
At the pastry shop we each had one of those and also shared Rissol de camarĂ£o (a breaded fish empanada) and Rolinho salsicha e queijo (breaded sausage with cheese). Both were amazing.
The store was the store. We were in need of some toiletries and a couple of meals. Salmon, salad, and toast were on the menu for dinner.
We also needed some fish sauce for tonight’s stir fry, but couldn’t find any at the market. Serendipitously, there was a Chinese market right next door. We got the fish sauce!
On the sidewalk next to the place we parked a man was selling 🎵chestnuts roasting on an open fire 🎵. We’ve never had roasted chestnuts, so we bought a bag. They were delicious. 🌰🎄
Just before bed, Keturah had a funny incident. We bought some toothpaste earlier at the market (at least we thought it was toothpaste). It turns out that we bought denture cream!
We were wondering why the checkout clerks at the store were talking about us to themselves. Usually we chalk that up to being foreign and sticking out, especially in a small town. But this time it was definitely something different!
After a sticky few minutes Keturah realized it was denture cream she was trying to brush with.
Cultural humility. There is a reason we use that term. It’s often a humbling adventure to shop in a foreign country.
