The Latin Quarter
On January 12, 2019 by brian.haferkampWe explored the Latin Quarter today. It was the place we had originally booked to stay in Paris and there are some really great sites we wanted to see while we were here.
Notre Dame
This is the only photo I have of Notre Dame itself. We actually attended noon mass today. That was our experience of Notre Dame and we didn’t spend a lot of time looking around.
We’re glad to give this experience of the Church to the girls. It was a very unique opportunity.
Shakespeare & Company
After Notre Dame we walked across the street to Shakespeare & Company, a very famous bookstore in the Latin Quarter. This is quite the unique bookstore and has a really interesting history. During the 1920s, it was a gathering place for many then-aspiring writers such as Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway, Djuna Barnes, James Joyce and Ford Madox Ford (via Wikipedia). After visiting the bookstore we had lunch at the cafe next door.
Cluny Museum
After lunch we walked to the Cluny museum, the museum of Medieval history.
The Sorbonne
After the Cluny (and a little hot chocolate) we made our way toward the Sorbonne (the University of Paris). It’s not some place that you can just walk into but we did walk around the area.
The Panthéon
Just up the street from the Sorbonne was the Panthéon. Originally a church it is now a mausoleum containing the remains of some of France’s famous artists and statesmen.
Moules Fritas
Since I met Keturah she has been telling me about the mussels in white wine sauce and french fries that she had in Paris (called moules fritas). On our way home last night we asked a waiter where he would go for that dish. He told us Léon de Bruxelles. So we looked it up and headed that way. The mussels were very delicious and we had a little sweet treat to top it off.
After dinner we walked back to our hotel. I got this shot of the Musée d’Orsay, a train station turned art museum, on our way across the River Seine.
