The Canton Opera Art Museum

It is hard for to me to tell the difference between Peking Opera and Canton Opera. They both sport fabulous makeup and costumes–and as I have no clue what’s actually going on during the opera, my impression is that the two have more features in common than not. We spent a sunny Saturday in November

All things new

We landed just after midnight on Tuesday morning and were picked up from the airport by 2 graduate student assistants named Mia and Rudy. Mia and Rudy proved invaluable over the next 48 hours. They helped me get registered with the local police, get new SIM cards for our phones, set up our internet services,

Things to do in Guangzhou!

Traveling with kids is a superb experience. We’ve traveled to many countries with our children and really enjoy learning about the world with them. For the last two trips, we’ve asked the kids to create a custom list of “things to do in…” This exercise helps the kids take ownership of  their experience by inviting

The Latin Quarter

We explored the Latin Quarter today. It was the place we had originally booked to stay in Paris and there are some really great sites we wanted to see while we were here. Notre Dame This is the only photo I have of Notre Dame itself. We actually attended noon mass today. That was our

The Louvre

We only have a short time in Paris so we’re trying to enjoy it and maximize the opportunities at the same time. Today we spent the day at the Louvre. It was glorious. And tiring. The girls impressed us with their stamina and were exposed to the most famous art museum in the world.

Paris

We are flying out of Paris on Monday and have hoped to spend a few days exploring the city center. Every time we tried to get a flight and hotel room in Paris some part didn’t work out. Last week we were finally able to get tickets to fly and a hotel room. So today

Sintra

Today we visited Sintra, a mountain village about 30 minutes north of Lisbon. The village dates back to the Romans and has a long history. There is a Moorish castle atop the mountain overlooking Sintra and the Royal family built the summer palace there. We visited the town then walked up past the national palace

Bookstores in Lisbon

Today was a fun outing. We went to two famous bookstores in Lisbon, finally ate a bifana (pork sandwich on fresh baked bread) and had some more tasty treats from our friend, Chef João’s bakery. It was a great day. The first bookshop is called, Livraria Bertand. It was opened in the 18th century and

Óbidos

Today we drove an hour north to the village of Óbidos, a town and castle that archaeologists say is built on the site of a Roman settlement. The castle was captured by the first King of Portugal in 1148. There is a well-preserved acquaduct that is connected to the village.   For dinner we stopped

Pasteis de Belém

We stopped at the most famous cafe in Lisbon, Pasteis de Belém. They opened in 1837 and are the originators of the pastel de nata. The recipe is from the monastery next door. Read about the history of Pasteis de Belém. There is a huge line to get a pastry on the sidewalk or a
